Abstract

Approximately 0.5% of the land area of the Republic of Ireland is currently protected for nature conservation. The sites comprising this area have been assembled over a number of years by a variety of state and voluntary agencies and their acquisition has followed no unified policy. This paper examines the current provision for nature conservation in terms of the distribution of protected sites and the extent to which they are representative of the major Irish habitats. The views of many of the organisations involved in conservation, elicited through a questionnaire survey, are also presented. Future directions for nature conservation are discussed in the light of these findings and in the context of national economic stringencies.
